ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND TRANSLATOR

SÉRGIO MATTOS was born in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil in 1948. Most of his education, through the B.A, was in Salvador, Bahia. He completed his M.A. in Radio, Television, Film, and his Ph.D. in International Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the faculty of the Federal University of Bahia.

He was a co-founder of the poetry magazine, Experimental, in Bahia. His poetry includes the books: Nas Teias do Mundo (1973), O Vigia do Tempo (1977), English translation Time's Sentinel (1979) by Maria Luisa Nunes, Já Não Canto, Choro, English translation I No Longer Singer, I Cry (1980) by Albert G. Bork, Lançados ao Mar (1985), Asas Para Amar (1995), Estandarte (1995) e Trilha Poética (coming out 1998). His work has appeared in many magazines and literary supplements in Brazil and in the anthologies Cinco Poetas Contemporâneos(1974) and Retina (1975).

ALBERT G. BORK was born in Mexico, D.F., Mexico. His Ph.D. dissertation was on Doramundo by the Brazilian author Geraldo Ferraz. He has taught Portuguese, Spanish, and French at the Universities of Texas, Nebraska, Iowa and others. He works as an interpreter and translator.

His published translations include two novels by Oswald de Andrade: Sentimental Memoirs of John Seaborne (with Ralph W. Niebuhr), Seraphim Grosse Pointe (with K.D. Jackson), and Sérgio Mattos' poems book I No Longer Sing, Cry, among others.
